عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالإِثْمِ فَقَالَ ‏“‏ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ ‏”‏ Nawwas b. Sim’an al-Ansiri (رضى الله عنه) reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about righteousness and sin. He said: “Righteousness is to have good character and sin is what festers in your heart and you hate for people to know about it.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 032, Number 6195)
