“And be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity: and whatever good you send forth for your souls before you, you shall find it with Allah: for Allah sees well all that you do.” (al-Baqarah:110)

Salam Alaikom, I asked previously about support in Quran and/or Hadith about the concept of the bad eye. I'm wondering if you received my previous question. Thank you in advance for your response.

Walaikum Assalam,

Apologies for not answering your question sooner.

The concept of “bad” or “evil” eye has appeared numerous times in ahadeeth.

  • It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that Jibreel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “O Muhammad, are you ill?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you).” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Salaam, 4056)
  • It was narrated from Ibn’ Abbaas that the Prophet (SWS) said: The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree (al-qadar) it would be the evil eye.”  (Muslim, 2188).

Great Scholars such as; Imam al-Qurtubi (Allah have mercy on him) states:

“All the scholars of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah are unanimous on the fact that the evil eye is true and that it can cause harm to the one whom it reaches.” ( al-Jami` li Ahkam al-Qur’an)

There are many evidences that establish the concept of evil eye.

  • The verse in Surah al-Falaq states: “I seek refuge from the envier when he envies.” (Surah al-Falaq, Verse 5).
  •  The Hadith towards which Imam Nasafi (Allah have mercy on him) alluded has been recorded by many Hadith scholars including Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih, where the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) took Allah’s refuge for Hasan and Husain from every evil eye.

There are many ways to protect oneself from the influence of evil eye, such as reciting dua’s and performing wudhoo.

  • A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah

(I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye) ( Bukhari, 3120).

  • “Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek

(In the name of Allaah I perform ruqya for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allah heal you, in the name of Allah I perform ruqya for you).” (Muslim, 4056)

  • The Prophet (pbuh) also instructed the use of rukya to anyone who was under the influence of the evil eye as Aisha (RA) narrated: “The Messenger of Allaah (pbuh) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqya to deal with the evil eye.” (Bukhari, 5297).

Also reciting Surah Al’Falaq and Surah’Nas from the Qu’ran are beneficial acts of protection.
